A look at the upcoming eight-part limited series “Leonardo” has released, with Irish actor Aidan Turner (“Poldark”) playing the titular role of Leonardo Da Vinci.
The series is created by Steve Thompson (“Sherlock”) and Frank Spotnitz (“The Man in the High Castle”) and will focus on the early life of Da Vinci and what led him to become one of the most legendary and famed artists of all time.
The following is the synopsis for the series as published on the official website for Big Light Productions:
Born the illegitimate son of a notary in the rural town of Vinci, Leonardo’s lonely childhood leaves him with a relentless, near-superhuman drive to understand everything. Under questioning by a Milanese investigator who holds Leonardo’s life in his hands, we come to see the terrible personal sacrifice that led him to create masterpieces that changed the way we see the world forever.
Freddie Highmore (“The Good Doctor”) stars alongside Turner as Stefano Giraldi, while other cast members include James D’Arcy (“Dunkirk”), Matilda de Angelis, Antonio De Matteo, Gabriel Lo Giudice, and Robin Renucci.
Thompson and Spotnitz also pen the script for the series alongside Gabbie Asher, while the episodes are directed by Daniel Percival (“The Man in the High Castle”) and Alexis Sweet. The series is produced by Big Light Productions, Lux Vide and The Alliance, while Sony Pictures Television will distribute worldwide according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Turner marks the latest actor to play the iconic Leonardo Da Vinci, with others to portray him including Frank Langella in the television movie “I, Leonardo: A Journey Into the Mind” and Mark Rylance in the mini-series also titled “Leonardo.”
Turner first gained worldwide attention for his role as Kili in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” franchise, before landing a leading part in the British television series “Poldark.” He recently made his West End debut in Martin McDonagh’s play “The Lieutenant of Inishmore,” a darkly comic exploration of the leader of an IRA splinter group that won Turner a Stage Debut Award for Best West End Debut.
