WATCH: Alice Wu’s ‘The Half of It’ Sees a New Kind of Love Story in First Trailer

Netflix releases the trailer for Alice Wu‘s romantic comedy, “The Half of It.” It stars Leah Lewis (“Charmed”) and Daniel Diemer (“Sacred Lies”). Wu writes and directs.

“The Half of It” describes itself as “a different kind of love story,” as it follows a shy, straight-A teenager (Ellie, played by Lewis) who is called upon a sweet jock (Paul, played by Diemer) to help him charm the popular girl. Unbeknownst to Paul, Ellie finds herself falling deeply in love with the object of their affection.

Although she’s willing to scribe Paul’s love letters to Aster (Alexxis Lemire), Ellie can’t help but foster these new feelings. Paul and Ellie’s relationship further complicates as she tries to navigate her feelings and that of his unlikely new ally.

Netflix started production on Wu’s film in August of last year. The project is a follow-up to Wu’s previous film, her directorial debut with “Saving Face.” Wu is a 2005 Gotham Award nominee for Best Breakthrough Director and the film is a 2006 GLAAD Media Award nominee for Outstanding Film- Limited Release. It was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics.

Executive producers are Erica Matlin and Greg Zuk. Likely Story produces, with other titles including Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights,” Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” and the Netflix Original series, “Living with Yourself,” starring Paul Rudd. “The Half of It” also stars Becky Ann Baker, Catherine Curtin, Wolfgang Novogratz and Enrique Murciano.

“The Half of It” releases on Netflix May 1. Netflix is also distributing the film in Singapore across video-on-demand platforms on May 1. With the coronavirus pandemic stopping theatrical releases, streaming content is in high demand.
