Universal Pictures released the official trailer for “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”
The film is a sequel to the 2008 hit, “Mamma Mia!” That film was an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical developed from the music of iconic Swedish pop group ABBA.
All of the original cast members reprise their roles for this sequel. This time around, Amanda Seyfried‘s Sophie finds herself pregnant and about to become an unwed mother. Worried and alone, she turns to her mother’s best friends to find out just how her mother managed a similar situation all those years ago.
Meryl Streep returns as Donna, and is played in her youth by Lily James (“Darkest Hour”). Her friends Tanya and Rosie return in the forms of Christine Baranski and Julie Walter, as well as their young counterparts Jessica Keenan Wynn (“Billions”) and Alexa Davies (“The Sense of an Ending”).
Sophie’s three dads return in the form of Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. Josh Dylan (“Allied”), Jeremy Irvine (“Fallen”), and Hugh Skinner (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) play their younger selves.
Dominic Cooper is back as Sophie’s erstwhile fiancé, Sky. Other new cast members include Andy Garcia as Fernando and Sophie’s grandmother Ruby Sheridan, played by Cher.
Following the box office success of the first film, which was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson, this sequel has been turned over to writer/director Ol Parker. Parker wrote the scripts for both “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” He also wrote and directed the 2012 film “Now Is Good,” which starred Dakota Fanning and Jeremy Irvine.
“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is an original musical featuring more of the discography of ABBA. It will be in theaters on July 20, 2018.
