WATCH: Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce Are ‘The Two Popes’ in First Teaser Trailer from Netflix

Netflix unveiled another of their 2019 awards contenders today, as a Teaser Trailer dropped for “The Two Popes” from director Fernando Meirelles. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, with a screenplay by Anthony McCarten, it’s sure to be a character study and acting showcase of the highest order.

“The Two Popes” is inspired by true events and follows a meeting between, well, two very different popes, one outgoing and one about to assume the role. This is the official synopsis from Netflix:

From Fernando Meirelles, the Academy Award-nominated director of “City of God,” and three-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten, comes an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

The teaser trailer highlights the differences between both holy men. The old school nature of Hopkins’ Pope Benedict stands in stark contrast to the newer ways of Pryce’s soon to be Pope Francis. Throughout the teaser, moments of quiet yet powerful drama pop up, suggesting that both men should be forces in the upcoming Oscar race.

In addition to Hopkins and Pryce, Sidney Cole, Juan Minujín, Federico Torre, and Thomas D Williams co-star. Bryce Dessner composed the score, while cinematography is by César Charlone. “The Two Popes” is currently playing at the Venice Film Festival, with impending bows at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

“The Two Popes” is being distributed by Netflix and is scheduled to be released in select theaters on November 27 before it streams globally on December 20.
