After a somewhat enigmatic teaser in August, Roadside Attractions has now released the official trailer for the upcoming drama, “Ben Is Back.”
Academy Award winner Julia Roberts stars as a mother who unexpectedly welcomes her son back home on Christmas Eve. Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges is the titular Ben, whose return launches the family into a tumultuous twenty-four hours.
Courtney B. Vance (“The People vs. OJ Simpson”) and Kathryn Newton (“Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri”) complete the core family.
Julia Roberts won her Academy Award for “Erin Brockovich” in 2000. Her film career really launched with the 1988 drama “Mystic Pizza,” and the beloved 1989 ensemble, “Steel Magnolias.” Throughout the nineties, Roberts was dubbed America’s Sweetheart. She starred in a steady stream of rom coms, dramas, and thrillers. Last year, she starred in “Wonder,” which was a film embraced by audiences.
Lucas Hedges has been busy the last couple of years. Following his Oscar-nominated work in “Manchester by the Sea,” he went on to supporting roles in “Three Billboards” and “Lady Bird.” This year, in addition to “Ben Is Back,” he also appears in Jonah Hill’s debut, “Mid90s” and stars in “Boy Erased.”
Peter Hedges wrote and directed “Ben Is Back,” which premiered at TIFF in September. Hedges earned an Oscar nomination for “About a Boy” in 2002. He also received an ACCA nomination for the 1993 script, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” Hedges made his directorial debut with “Pieces of April” in 2003, and followed it with “Dan in Real Life” in 2007 and “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” in 2012. Peter Hedges is also the father of Lucas Hedges.
“Ben Is Back” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It also played in Vancouver and will screen at Mill Valley, Chicago, and Philadelphia in the coming days.
