Lionsgate today released the trailer for “Spiral,” the upcoming horror film and the ninth installment in the “Saw” franchise. It was reported last year that Emmy Award winner Chris Rock (“The Chris Rock Show”) would be working with Lionsgate to develop the next film in the franchise and now that has come to fruition.
The film will mark a return to the franchise, with 2017’s “Jigsaw” the last outing of the gory horror series. The synopsis as per Lionsgate reads:
“A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.”
Rock stars, having also developed the story and is joined by Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction”), Max Minghella (“The Social Network”) and Marisol Nichols (“Riverdale”). Director Darren Lynn Bousman is no stranger to the “Saw” films, having directed “Saw II,” “Saw III” and “Saw IV”. “Spiral” marks Bousman’s return to the franchise after 13 years away. Oren Koules and Mark Burg return to produce, as they have done with every film in the franchise.
Chris Rock is set to have a busy 2020, with the fourth season of “Fargo” set to be released later in the year, as well as a role in “The Witches,” the next film from director Robert Zemeckis. Rock’s most notable work in film includes his voice acting in the “Madagascar” franchise and starring in the “Grown Ups” films alongside Adam Sandler.
Lionsgate will be releasing “Spiral” in the U.S. on May 15, 2020.
