The broadway cast includes Miranda in the titular role of Alexander Hamilton, along with Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr, Renée Elsie Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs, Okierete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Jonathan Groff.
The following is the synopsis for “Hamiton” as published by Disney to accompany the trailer release:
““Hamilton” is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, “Hamilton” has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. Filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.”
The musical catapulted the careers of many involved, including making Miranda a household name and of the most sought after artists in the industry today. The trailer reiterates the promise of how great the experience will be to finally watch this musical, with millions around the world having never had the opportunity to see this Broadway version.
Theatrical productions making their way online are starting to become common practice, with the UK’s National Theatre having streamed one performance a week on their YouTube channel during the COVID-19 lockdown. They have been incredibly successful and proved a hit with audiences, and Disney has no doubt struck gold by bringing “Hamilton” on to their streaming service.
