Disney has had a busy week so far. They’ve already released not one, but two teasers for “Toy Story 4.” They lost a legend who helped to usher in the next era of the company. Meanwhile, “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” made its world premiere. Yet the House of Mouse never slows down, choosing to dominate the headlines for another day. We received a teaser for the upcoming live-action remake of “Dumbo” a few months ago, but little has been discussed since then. That changes today, with the release of a new trailer from Disney that really brings the Tim Burton aesthetic to the story about a flying elephant.
Once again, the footage contains a soft-sung version of “Baby Mine” over the trailer. It helps to sell many of the emotional beats of the footage, which appears to be seeped in Burton trademarks. The sets look very showy and the world seems cobbled together. There’s a 1930’s aesthetic that feels Gatsby-esque, despite never going that colorful or glamorous. Michael Keaton steals most of the energy from this teaser, playing V. A. Vandevere, an entertainer and seemingly a con man. We also get some great moments with Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Nico Harper and Finley Hobbins. The additional story Burton added may feel like overkill, but it is necessary. After all, the original “Dumbo” only clocks in at 64 minutes. Feature movies need to be a little longer.
However, the star of the film remains the titular Dumbo. The animation and CGI are fitting for the little elephant. He comes off as adorable in most scenes, and the trailer sells the horror of the clown show. We also get a glimpse of his flying, something that could elevate the film. With a March release, look for this to be one of the big Spring releases.
