WATCH: Emma Thompson Shines in Second Trailer for ‘Late Night’

Emma Thompson

Amazon Studios have released the second trailer for Nisha Ganatra‘s “Late Night.” The comedy starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson first premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Kaling writes and also produces the feature, which follows the story of an established talk show host Katherine Newbury (Thompson) as she brings in a diversity hire (Kaling) to combat the accusations that she “hates women.” When new hire Molly Patel seems more fit for the job than any of the previous hires, Katherine discovers a fresh perspective in her team.

Kaling, who’s had a tremendous portfolio of comedies under her belt (“The Office,” “Ocean’s 8,” “The Mindy Project”), looks to spin an old story. Along with director Nisha Ganatra, who holds an Emmy nomination for “Transparent,” the two create an effervescent take on female-centered dynamic.

In an article from Variety:

“So much of this movie is about being a fan and being on the outside of the entertainment business,” Kaling told Variety. “That story has been told many, many, many times by 52-year-old white men, and I love all those movies. And as a comedy nerd I’ve always identified with them because it was the closest thing that I could identify with. There was no one like me making those kind of films.”

“Late Night” was acquired by Amazon Studios for a whopping $14 million deal, in the festival’s first major sale. It not only marks it up as one of the highest but it managed to outweigh Netflix’s deal last year for “Mudbound,” which closed for $12.5 million. The big streaming studios have been out to play amid awards season. Furthermore, this proves a confident trail for “Late Night”‘s awards contention. The film’s cast includes John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Paul Walter Hauser and Amy Ryan.

Amazon Studios is distributing the comedy, which hits theaters June 7. Check out the new trailer below!
