WATCH: First Trailer for ‘Gretel & Hansel’ Sees a Haunting Twist on a Fairytale

“The story you know hides a dark secret.” Orion Pictures have released the teaser trailer for “Gretel & Hansel,” a twisted take on the peculiar fairytale, directed by Oz Perkins. The film stars Sophia Lillis (“It Chapter Two”) as Gretel and Samuel Leakey as Hansel.

The story is adapted by Rob Hayes. The original book, written by Brothers Grimm, follows the story of the siblings as they’ve been abandoned by their parents, forced to journey the woods. Their eyes catch a peculiar, inviting house as its revealed to be occupied by a cannibalistic, blind witch. The teaser shows quick, terrifying glimpses as the tagline reads “a grim fairytale.” Seen are shots of an eye looking through a peephole, red smoke escaping a chimney, eerie woods and a table-filled feast the protagonists can only hope to not be a part of. The film certainly looks much grimmer and bleak than 2013’s adaptation of the story, “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” directed by Tommy Wirkola.

Perkins’ past work includes directing “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” and “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” both horror mystery features. He directs Sophia Lillis, a rising star who can be seen in Andy Muschietti’s “It Chapter Two.” She has also starred in “Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase” and HBO’s “Sharp Objects.” She is currently working on the upcoming Netflix series, “I Am Not Okay With This.” “Gretel and Hansel” also stars Alice Krige as the witch Holda, Charles Babalola as The Hunter and Jessica De Gouw as young Holda.

“Gretel & Hansel” is produced by Automatik, Orion Pictures and BRON Studios. United Artists Releasing will distribute the film in theaters January 31.
