Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for “The Assistant,” directed by Kitty Green and starring Julia Garner.
A searing look at a day in the life of an assistant to a powerful executive. As Jane (Emmy Award winner Julia Garner) follows her daily routine, she grows increasingly aware of the insidious abuse that threatens every aspect of her position.
The trailer immediately sets the tone when Jane is seen speaking with an HR representative. “Entry levels in this position are hard,” he tells her. But the mundanity of the office work is not what’s bothering Jane. Green directs from a script she wrote herself, putting the earned effort of also co-editing the feature with Blair McClendon, in Green’s first full-length narrative work. She helmed the documentaries “Ukraine is Not a Brothel” and “Casting JonBenet,” both of which did well at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts in their respective years.
“The Assistant” premiered at Telluride Film Festival earlier this year, where Award Circuit’s own Clayton Davis writes in his review, “The Assistant” packs a lot in its small package but presents itself as a larger than life, and eye-opening look into an industry that you can love, but are utterly ignorant to its demons. A brutal, critical examination of our world, and how we all have a responsibility to make it better than we currently accept it.”
Green’s film is headed by a subtle and powerful performance from Garner, an Emmy-winning actress who has also starred in “Waco,” “Dirty John,” “Maniac” and “Ozark.” The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen, Makenzie Leigh, Kristine Froseth, and Jon Orsini.
“The Assistant” is produced by 3311 Productions, JJ HoMEward Productions, Cinereach, Level Forward, Bellmer Pictures, Forensic Films, Symbolic Exchange Productions. Bleecker Street Media is distributing the film, arriving in theaters Jan. 31, 2020 in NY and LA, and everywhere in February.
