Neon and Hulu have released the first trailer for Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti’s new “Groundhog Day” inspired romantic comedy “Palm Springs.” The film debuted at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and quickly became one of the fest’s hottest titles. Not only was it welcomed with positive reviews, but it broke records for the largest sale of a film in Sundance history (beating the previous place holder by 69 cents) with Neon and Hulu paying $17.5 million for distribution rights.
The official synopsis is as follows:
While stuck at a wedding in Palm Springs, Nyles (Andy Samberg) meets Sarah (Cristin Milioti), the maid of honor and family black sheep. After he rescues her from a disastrous toast, Sarah becomes drawn to Nyles and his offbeat nihilism. But when their impromptu tryst is thwarted by a surreal interruption, Sarah must join Nyles in embracing the idea that nothing really matters, and they begin wreaking spirited havoc on the wedding celebration.
“Palm Springs” was initially slated to open in theaters this summer before the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it to streaming. The film will now hit Hulu on July 10, 2020.
The film is directed by Max Babakow and also stars J.K. Simmons, Peter Gallagher, Meredith Hagner, Tyler Hoechlin, Chris Pang, and “Riverdale’s” Camila Mendes. While at Sundance, Barbakow spoke with Variety about his film, saying, “We’re subverting a lot of the tropes you usually see in wedding movies and rom-coms. Tonally, it’s that really nice charged area between laughter and deep feeling and then just bonkers stuff. We’re trying a lot of things.”
Indeed the “Palm Springs” trailer promises a witty, hilarious, yet heartfelt romantic comedy that’s sure to make a massive splash online when it arrives on Hulu July 10.
