Fox Searchlight released the first trailer for its upcoming film, “The Shape of Water.”
The film is “an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda discover a secret classified experiment.
“The Shape of Water” stars Sally Hawkins as Elisa. Hawkins was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Blue Jasmine.” Octavia Spencer is Zelda. Spencer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for last year’s “Hidden Figures.” She also won the award for “The Help” in 2011.
The film also stars Michael Shannon, who was most recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor for “Nocturnal Animals.” And Michael Stuhlbarg, who appeared in last year’s “Arrival,” as well as season 3 of “Fargo.” He will also appear in this fall’s “The Papers.”
It is written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who was nominated for an Academy Award for writing “Pan’s Labyrinth.” He also directed “Pacific Rim” and will soon turn his attention to a live-action version of “Pinocchio.”
Co-writing the film is writer and producer Vanessa Taylor. Taylor was part of the team twice nominated for “Game of Thrones.” She also wrote the scripts for “Hope Springs” and “Divergent,” in addition to several television episodes.
“The Shape of Water” is due in theaters nationwide on December 8.
