Netflix has released a trailer for Prentice Penny‘s “Uncorked.” Penny, an executive producer of HBO’s “Insecure,” writes and directs his feature directorial debut.
Mamoudou Athie (“Patti Cake$,” “Sorry For Your Loss”) stars as Elijah, a budding wine aficionado who finds himself at a standstill between his dreams of becoming a master sommelier and trying to help his family’s Memphis barbeque shop from going under in his absence. He is faced with adverse expectations and the mantle which has been lined up for him, but also juggling his passion and family in the mix. Golden Globe nominee Courtney B. Vance (“American Crime Story”) and Primetime Emmy nominee Niecy Nash (“Claws,” “When They See Us”) star as his parents, Louis and Sylvia.
In an exclusive interview with People Magazine, Penny spoke on the underlining inspiration for his feature:
“When I became a father it made me want to examine the relationship with mine,” Penny tells PEOPLE. “I began to understand my father as just a guy trying to figure things out when I was a kid instead of ‘My Father.’ I wanted to tell a story about two men who didn’t have the best relationship figure out how to understand and at least respect each other.”
Penny also makes note of the standard portrait painted on film of how a relationship between a father and son is almost always contrived with negativity and absence. With “Uncorked,” the filmmaker places a genuine heart into fundamental differences within family and the pursuit of one young man’s aspirations.
In addition to “Insecure,” Penny is known for executive producing and writing for shows including “The Hustle,” “Brooklyn-Nine-Nine,” “Girlfriends,” “Scrubs” and “Happy Endings.”
