NEON have released the full U.S. trailer for Céline Sciamma‘s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. Sciamma won the screenplay prize at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for the critically favored lesbian drama. The film also won the festival’s Queer Palm award.
The official synopsis reads:
France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse’s first moments of freedom. Héloïse’s portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.
Sciamma is a French filmmaker best known for her riveting work in directing films like “Tomboy,” “Girlhood” and “Water Lilies.” Her writing credits include penning the screenplay for Claude Barras’ Oscar nominated animated film “My Life As a Zucchini,” as well as “Being 17” and “Ivory Tower.”
Merlant and Haenel, the film’s two leads, are award-winning actresses. Merlant won the award for best actress in Nathan Ambrosioni’s “Paper Flags.” She has also starred in “Heaven Will Wait,” “Curiosa” and Mélanie Laurent’s “Diving.” Haenel has won acting awards for her role in Thomas Cailley’s “Love at First Fight.” Her previous roles include “House of Tolerance,” “The Unknown Girl” and the Cannes award-winning “BPM (Beats Per Minute).”
