Paramount Pictures have released the first trailer for “The Lovebirds,” in what sees Issa Rae (“Little”) and Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”) as a couple who stumble onto an ongoing investigation that will lead them to clearing their names- hilariously, of course. The film is directed by Michael Showalter and written by both Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, with a story by Martin Gero.
A couple (Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a bizarre crime. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme – and hilarious – circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.
As they’re on the verge of a break-up, their car gets hijacked by a “police officer” and immediately chases down a man and runs him over, leaving the couple to do a little bit of investigating in high comedy fashion.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rae said, “Initially they were written for white people which, plot-wise, would have been a different story. It’s not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we’re an interracial couple.”
Issa Rae, a two-time Golden Globe nominee, can also be seen in this year’s
“The Photograph,” a romantic drama with costar LaKeith Stanfield, due in theaters on Valentine’s Day. She executive produces “The Lovebirds.”
Nanjiani, who shares an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay with screenwriter Emily V. Gordon for “The Big Sick,” also executive produces “The Lovebirds.” He is set to appear in Marvel’s “The Eternals” in November. He is also best known as Dinesh on the series “Silicon Valley.” He can be heard as a voice on “Dolittle,” starring Robert Downey Jr.
Nanjiani reteams with Showalter, who directed him in 2017’s “The Big Sick.”
Paramount Pictures will distribute “The Lovebirds” in theaters April 3.
