“If it chooses you, nothing can save you.” Lionsgate have released a teaser trailer for “Antebellum,” a new thriller starring Janelle Monáe and directed by Gerard Bush & Christopher Renz.
Successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.
The film comes from the producers of Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which earned over $255 million at the box office, and “Us,”the director’s sophomoric effort which earned over $246 million worldwide. Both of Peele’s films feature a chilling story with a sharp underlining social commentary.
The “Antebellum” teaser finds its way between eras. Veronica is seen in modern time and somehow mysteriously stuck in the American slavery period. The teaser shows just enough to pique audience curiosity while pedaling Monáe to the center of the plot. The singer increases her acting career with another one for the books. Monae will also star in Julie Taymor’s “The Glorias,” alongside Julianna Moore and Alicia Vikander. The film is in post-production with hopes of a 2020 release date.
Bush and Renz direct from their own written script. The duo also produced the film with Raymond Mansfield, Sean McKittrick, Zev Foreman and Lezlie Wills. Bush and Renz directed the documentary “Canvases of Courage.”
Monáe can be seen in Kasi Lemmons’ film “Harriet.” She has also recently starred in “Uglydolls,” “Welcome to Marwen,” “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.”
The film also stars Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles, and Jena Malone.
