Sony Pictures have released the first official trailer for “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto and directed by Daniel Espinosa. IGN unveiled the trailer Monday morning.
“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”
Leto stars in the titular role, based on the Marvel comic books from Gil Kane and Roy Thomas. The feature film is adapted and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Sony Pictures hope to have a rated-R success on their hands a la “Logan” and “Joker.” The studio produced other comic book properties “Venom,” whch grossed over $856 million at the box office, and the recent “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which earned over $1.3 billion.
“Morbius”‘s Jared Leto won an Oscar in 2014 for his supporting role in “Dallas Buyers Club.” He played a version of the notorious Joker character in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad,” a role that earned Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar nom as well as earning “Joker” ten other mentions from Monday’s Oscar nominations. The cast of “Morbius” also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.
Espinosa directs the film, just three years after his sci-fi thriller, “Life” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, released. Espinosa also helmed “Outside Love,” “Safe House” and “Child 44.”
