John Curran’s (“Tracks”) latest project brings up a 1969 tragedy that left one woman dead and Ted Kennedy on the brink of political banishment.

“Chappaquiddick,” which stars Jason Clarke (“Everest”) as the late senator, sheds new light on the night Kennedy drove off a bridge into the waters off Chappaquiddick Island. While Kennedy managed to swim for shore, passenger Mary Jo Kopechne, played by Kate Mara (“House of Cards”), wasn’t so lucky. Instead of calling for help or attempting to save Kopechne, Kennedy staggered back to his home and went to bed, failing to report the accident for 10 hours. The drama’s new trailer, released on Wednesday, follows the immediate aftermath of the incident, Kennedy’s guilt and how the famous family tried to spin the story to save Kennedy’s chances for a presidential run, according to Slashfilm.

Curran directs off a screenplay from Taylor Allen (“The Simpsons”) and Andrew Logan (“Hellion”), which made the Black List back in 2015. Bruce Dern (“The Hateful Eight”) portrays Kennedy patriarch Joe Kennedy, with Clancy Brown (“Thor: Ragnarok”) as Robert McNamara, Ed Helms (“The Office”) as Joe Gargan. Also starring are Jim Gaffigan (“It’s Kind of a Funny Story”) as DA Paul Markham and Andria Blackman (“Year By the Sea”) as Joan Kennedy. Allen and Logan executive produce with DMG’s Dan Mintz (“Iron Man 3”), Chris Fention (“47 Ronin”) and Apex Entertainment’s Mark Ciardi (“Invincible”).

A deal for the North American rights to “Chappaquiddick” was inked last September at Toronto’s International Film Festival (TIFF), with Byron Allen paying $4 million for the rights and promising a $16 million promotion campaign during awards season. Allen’s production banner, Entertainment Studios, recently found success with their indie horror hit “47 Meters Down.”

“Chappaquiddick” premieres April 6, 2018. Watch the trailer below.
