Universal and Legendary Pictures released the first official trailer for upcoming sequel “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
The film is a sequel to the surprise hit “Pacific Rim,” which grossed more than $400 million worldwide in 2013. That film was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, and starred Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam.
“Uprising” takes the story forward several years where a new generation of Jaeger pilots must once again stop a Kaiju threat.
John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker. Boyega catapulted to stardom with his role as Finn in “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.” It is a role he will reprise this December for “The Last Jedi.” He also co-starred this summer in Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit.”
“Pacific Rim: Uprising” also stars Scott Eastwood. In just ten years the actor has amassed a filmography that includes “Gran Torino,” “Fury,” “Suicide Squad,” and “The Fate of the Furious.”
The cast also includes Rinko Kikuchi, who reprises her role as Mako Mori. Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), Adria Arjona (“True Detective”), and Tian Jing (“Kong: Skull Island”) star in the film, too.
The film is directed by Steven S. DeKnight. Until now, most of his film work has been on the producing side. He has directed episodes of several television series including “Angel,” “Smallville,” “Dollhouse,” and “Daredevil.”
The script was written in various forms by DeKnight, T.S. Nowlin, Kira Snyder, and Emily Carmichael.
“Pacific Rim: Uprising” will be released on March 23, 2018.
