IFC Films has released a teaser trailer for “The Nest,” an eerie family drama starring Jude Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley“) and Carrie Coon ( “The Leftovers,”). Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene“) writes and directs his sophomore feature, which world premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
The official synopsis is as follows:
Rory (Jude Law), an ambitious entrepreneur and former commodities broker, persuades his American wife, Allison (Carrie Coon), and their children to leave the comforts of suburban America and return to his native England during the 1980s. Sensing opportunity, Rory rejoins his former firm and leases a centuries-old country manor, with grounds for Allison’s horses and plans to build a stable. Soon the promise of a lucrative new beginning starts to unravel, the couple have to face the unwelcome truths lying beneath the surface of their marriage.
In an interview with Deadline, Durkin expresses the direct influence of family displacement between the U.S. and the U.K. when writing the script. Having moved often between the two regions, Durkin says, “that sudden change to a family and that change of environment would be a great backdrop for the movie.” With “The Nest,” Durkin explores increasing tension in the family. The film also stars Charlie Shotwell, Oona Roche, Adeel Akhtar, and Michael Culkin. This is Durkin’s follow-up to his 2011 debut with “Martha Marcy May Marlene.”
Law, a two-time Academy Award nominee, stars in the film after his role last year in Marvel’s “Captain Marvel.” He stars alongside Coon, a Primetime Emmy nominated actress, who starred in Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”
As theaters weigh out their reopening plans amid the pandemic, “The Nest“ is slated to open on Sept. 18. Element Pictures, BBC Films, and FilmNation Entertainment produce.
