The season is underway, and the awards race has officially kicked off. For many films, they had to wait for their first prizes. This was not the case for “Mary Queen of Scots,” which already took home prizes for Best Makeup and Hairstyling from the Hollywood Film Awards, and Best Score for Max Richter at Hollywood Music in Media Awards. The feature, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, has begun to make its push for the Oscars. However, Focus Features has eyes on a strong box office for the period piece. Today, they’ve released the last trailer for the film as it releases in select theaters this weekend.

“Mary Queen of Scots” follows Ronan as the titular monarch and her push to become Queen of England. However, her cousin Elizabeth (Robbie) stands in her way. The two women became the focus of the world, each powerful in their roles. The film seeks to understand the famed monarchs and the power two women held in a time when that was far from the norm.

The film has been met with a mixed reaction, but a positive one all the same. While the acting races may provide too much competition for Robbie or Ronan, the film has positioned itself well in the crafts. Richter’s score has already made a strong impression on many who heard it and is considered one of the best of the year. The make-up team includes Jenny Shircore, who already has an Oscar for “Elizabeth,” and will push hard for a prize. Ignore any negative preconceptions, because “Mary Queen of Scots” seems poised to grab an Oscar nomination.
