WATCH: Meryl Streep Investigates Fraud in First Trailer for Steven Soderbegh’s ‘The Laundromat’

Academy Award winner Meryl Streep in a still for Soderbergh's upcoming "The Laundromat," a feature drama on the Panama Papers

Netflix have released the first official trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s “The Laundromat,” starring Academy Award winner Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”), Academy Award winner Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”), Antonio Banderas, Jeffrey Wright, Robert Patrick, David Schwimmer and Sharon Stone. The trailer premiered exclusively on Variety Wednesday morning just ahead of its debut at Venice Film Festival on September 1st.

A widow (Meryl Streep) investigates an insurance fraud, chasing leads to a pair of Panama City law partners (Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas) exploiting the world’s financial system. Steven Soderbergh directs.

The trailer sees Streep as a widow who finds herself investigating an insurance fraud. Of course, if you need two big wig caricatures of law partners, look no further than Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas. In Soderbergh’s latest, he takes a wacky swing at an otherwise somber plot. Corruption is the center of the story, an adaptation on Jake Bernstein’s non-fiction book “Secrecy World,” where a group of journalists uncover the illicit money handling that became the findings in The Panama Papers.
From the Variety article:

Soderbergh told Variety that the journalists-uncover-a-scandal story had been covered well already in films, so he wanted to entertain the audience with a worldwide amorality.

Soderbergh’s past work includes the string of films following “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Traffic,” which won him his Best Director Oscar, and “Erin Brokovich,” a film that nominated him again for directing, but also won Julia Roberts a win for best actress. Soderbergh directs “The Laundromat” from a script written by Scott Z. Burns, who directs “The Report,” a political drama starring Adam Driver and Annette Benning, set for Toronto Film Festival and Amazon this fall.

“The Laundromat” will be screening at San Sebastian Film Festival and Venice Film Festival, as well as its North American premiere at Toronto International Film Festival. The film is produced and distributed by Netflix Studios. It hits streaming October 18 after a limited theatrical run that’ll launch it into the middle of awards buzz.
