Mike Leigh continues to showcase why he’s one of the great filmmakers of his generation. Leigh has long flirted with Oscar glory, racking up 7 nominations in his career. His last film, “Mr. Turner,” received 4 nominations and drew raves for Leigh’s direction and screenplay. Now he returns with another period drama that seems built to this moment in politics. With Amazon backing the project, “Peterloo” could make a splash with Oscar.
Today, Amazon released the trailer for the new period drama. “Peterloo” looks to be a fairly epic story for Leigh. Most of his work in the past has been about internal strife. Features like “Another Year” or “Secrets and Lies” have defined his career. Leigh has been nominated at the Oscars for his work as both writer and a director. This time out, he is taking a largely unknown cast to give the story it’s maximum impact. However, don’t sleep on the talent in this film. After all, nearly every below-the-line department is headed by an Oscar nominee. Given the trailer, this one could very much in be in-line for some tech awards come the Fall. Amazon released the first trailer for the movie today. Watch it below.
Amazon released a synopsis for the film.
Internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Leigh portrays one of the bloodiest episodes in British history, the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819, where government-backed cavalry charged into a peaceful crowd of 80,000 that gathered in Manchester, England to demand democratic reform.
