Disney has unveiled the official trailer for “Mulan,” directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu. Mulan fights to stay “loyal, brave and true” in this live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1998 animated film. Backdropped by a grand scale rendition of “Reflection,” the trailer sees Mulan harnessing her strength.
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
Caro directs from a script by writers Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. In Caro’s previous work she has directed “Memory & Desire,” “North Country,” “A Heavenly Vintage” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” starring Jessica Chastain. Caro is also in pre-production with a biographical project on operatic singer Maria Callas.
Along with Liu, “Mulan” also stars Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jason Scott Lee and Yoson An. Golden Globe nominee Harry Gregson-Williams (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”) is composing the score while cinematographer Mandy Walker (“Australia”) shoots the feature.
Disney’s 1998 animated feature, directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, grossed over $120 million at the worldwide box office, reeling in over $422 million in its domestic debut. It featured the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy,Harvey Fierstein, James Hong and Pat Morita.
Walt Disney Studios is distributing “Mulan,” opening in theaters March 27, 2020.
