Netflix has released the season two trailer for “The Politician.” The show sees star Ben Platt as Payton Hobart, a charismatic man looking to be the face of America, a dream he has had since childhood. Through his political journey, Peyton goes up against hilarious and formidable enemies. The series is created by Ryan Murphy (“Hollywood”), Ian Brennan, and Brad Falchuck.
Peyton finds himself on the heavy campaign trail against the snappy incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light). Season two uncovers secrets and plots as the state senate race heats up. The series stars Platt, as well as Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Bette Midler, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, and Julia Schlaepfer.
“The Politician” holds two Golden Globe nominations, for Best Musical or Comedy Series and for Platt’s lead performance. The show also holds a win from the GALECA Dorian Awards for Campy TV Show of the Year. Its Golden Globe and Emmy efforts continue as the second season gears up.
In an interview with Variety, Platt discusses the work put in for season one that allows a burst of fun in the show’s second season:
“I think that allows for a bit of a sharper, focused humor and a little more of a raunchiness that’s fun, and it’s all a little bit more streamlined. I think we have so much to set up in the first season, so much world to create and backstory to tell, and now we get to really focus on the specifics of this election. And it’s in New York, which we love.”
Platt is set to begin filming on Richard Linklater’s project, “Merrily We Roll Along,” akin to the director’s 12-year feature, “Boyhood.” Platt stars alongside Beanie Feldstein in a musical drama spanning decades.
Netflix and Ryan Murphy Productions produce “The Politician.” Season two arrives on Netflix on June 19.
