Netflix has released the teaser trailer for the South African series, “Blood & Water.” The six-episode series stars Ama Qamata, Khosi Ngema, and Thabang Kamogelo Molaba. Bradley Joshua and Benjamin Overmeyer produce.
After crossing paths at a party, Puleng Khumalo (Qamata), a Cape Town teen sets out to prove whether a private-school swimming star is her sister who was abducted at birth. She navigates this while trying to balance her school life.
In her acting debut, Qamata plays the lead role, a girl maneuvering two different perspectives, the one she’s known all her life and the one this new school life welcomes her into. Directing and co-writing the episodes are Nosipho Dumisa, Daryne Joshuaodes and Travis Taute. Gambit Films produces the series. Dumisa, who directs half of the first season, also helmed the 2018 SXSW title, “Number 37,” backed by Gambit Films. “Blood & Water” is an addition to the streaming platform’s growing range of content outside of the United States. From Africa, Netflix also produces “Queen Sono,” its first African original series.
“Following on the heels of ‘Queen Sono,’ ‘Blood & Water’ is the next step in our further investment in original African content, and we’re excited to explore more projects across the region,” says Kelly Luegenbiehl, Netflix’s vice president of international originals for Europe, Turkey and Africa.
In March of 2019, Netflix ordered the series to production, featuring on-screen debuts from its up-and-coming stars. In the effort to broaden content reach, Netflix also produces the Johannesburg-set series, “Shadow,” which premiered in March. The series follows an ex-cop on the pursuit of justice. Gareth Crocker and Fred Wolmarans direct the series. Netflix also recently released Damien Chazelle’s “The Eddy,” a multilingual jazz series starring Andre Holland and Joanna Kulig.
The first season of “Blood & Water” premieres on Netflix on May 20.
