WATCH: Netflix Releases a Full-Length Trailer for Contender ‘Roma’ Ahead of Theatrical Release

Roma” from Alfonso Cuarón has continued to pick up buzz heading towards the awards season. Cuarón, winner of Best Director for his work on “Gravity,” took his carte blanche and made an extremely personal film. The story of a Mexico City in the 1970s and the tumultuous life lived in the city is stunningly brought to life. Shot in black and white, and with Cuarón not only directing but shooting and editing the feature, the world feels like few others in recent memory. Today, Netflix released the official full-length trailer ahead of their choice to place the feature in theaters.

The full-length trailer adds more footage and texture to the world. The last footage seen by most of the general public seemed to focus on several of the long shots. This one drifts between many scenes, adding to the intensity of the story on screen. There’s a lot to like in this one and adds the grandiosity of a family tale. For those who have not yet seen the film, it should help to drum up interest before watching it on Netflix.

However, there is a fair question about whether or not this film will have resonance outside of the cinephile community. The story is certainly timely, especially given the way the White House painted the migrant caravan. Yet foreign language films rarely breakthrough with the general public. “Amour,” the last foreign language film nominated for Best Picture, only picked up $6 million at the domestic box office. Rarely does a film become as ingrained in the culture as a “Life is Beautiful.” However, with Netflix releasing, access will be at an all-time high. The theatrical release will appease the cinephiles, and the streaming release will help others watch Cuarón’s latest.

What do you think of the new trailer for “Roma?” Can Alfonso Cuarón continue to gain momentum toward a Best Picture nomination? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

“Roma” opens theatrically on Nov. 21, 2018. It releases on Netflix on Dec. 14, 2018.
