J.C. Chandor has emerged as one of the more interesting filmmakers over the past decade. “A Most Violent Year” helped to establish Oscar Isaac as a star. “All Is Lost” brought Robert Redford within an inch of Oscar glory. Chandor’s Oscar-nominated screenplay, “Margin Call” helped contextualize Wall Street after the economic crash. However, Chandor’s direction on “Deepwater Horizon” fell through, and it’s been almost five years since his last film. However, he is going to return in a big way with “Triple Frontier,” which features Ben Affleck leading a star-studded cast. The first trailer for the Netflix film can be found below.
“Triple Frontier” follows a group of soldiers as they attempt to pull off a heist in the jungles of South America. The former soldiers look to use their dangerous and elite skills to their own benefit. They’ve been left poor, destitute, and without a way to provide for their families. However, the danger is high, and without a government to bail them out, the risk is all theirs.
The cast features some of the best young actors in Hollywood today. In addition to Affleck leading up the group, Oscar Isaac looks to play a major role. Also in the group are Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal. Mark Boal, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty” gets both the screenplay and story credits on the film. That certainly won’t hurt the film. With the combined powers of Boal and Chandor writing the screenplay, “Triple Frontier” could be special. It looks like Netflix might have another surprise hit on its hands with the action film. The question will be whether or not it’s a “commercial” play for Netflix, or if it has the goods to be something more.
