Netflix’s latest offering is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Bryan Fogel’s (“Jewtopia”) thriller documentary “Icarus” promises intrigue and tension. Fogel follows Grigory Rodchenkov, a key player in the Russian doping scheme, as the scandal goes public and Rodchenkov finds himself in the crosshairs of the Russian government’s anger. “Icarus” takes us through a story marked by unexplained murders, dirty urine, and the biggest sports scandal of all time.
The documentary is already a Sundance award winner, winning the Special Jury Prize in 2017, and is sure to pick up more accolades after its public release. It is the first documentary film from Fogel, who directed and produced the documentary.
The title of the documentary references the famous Greek myth of Icarus. In the myth, a father and son attempt to escape danger via wings made of feathers and wax. The father instructs the son to never fly too close to the sun or sea, as sunrays or dampness will destroy his wings. Icarus disobeys his father, flying too close to the sun; the wax melts and Icarus falls to his death. In this nail-biting documentary, is Icarus Rodchenkov, or the Russian government?
“Icarus” premieres on Netflix on Aug. 4. Watch the trailer below.
