A new full-length trailer for Disney’s upcoming animated film, “Moana,” was released earlier today. The trailer teases the big adventure between Moana and Maui, as well as the gorgeous animation.
Per the synopsis, three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.
“Moana” is a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teen who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage. Along the way they encounter enormous monsters and impossible odds. In addition, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
“Moana” is the first animated Disney film to feature a Polynesian princess. The trailer gives the first real glimpse of Moana, as well as demigod Maui in action. It also features some of Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina’s original music.
The film joins a long list of other animated films vying for Oscar attention this year. Disney already has the hit “Zootopia” on its hands, for instance. Pixar has “Finding Dory” to promote. Other big hitters include “Kubo and the Two Strings” (Focus Features), “My Life As a Zucchini” (GKIDS) and “Sing” (Illumination/Universal).
Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
