Derek Cianfrance (“The Place Beyond the Pines,” “Blue Valentine”) is back with his latest emotional drama, “The Light Between Oceans.” Real-life couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander star in the screen adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s novel of the same name. The second official trailer for the film was released today, and it provides a wider look into the lives of Vikander’s Isabel and Fassbender’s Tom, as well as Rachel Weisz as Hannah.

The film features Vikander and Fassbender as a husband and wife who live on a remote Australian island. One day, following miscarriages and struggles to conceive a child, a baby appears to them in a small boat and they decide to keep the child and raise it as their own. Things get complicated when the child’s real mother (Weisz) enters the picture and the couple is faced with a moral dilemma.

“True Detective” and “Macbeth” cinematographer Adam Arkapaw worked on this film, which features an adapted script by Cianfrance.

Fassbender was  nominated at the Oscars last year for Best Actor for his role in “Steve Jobs.” Vikander won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role opposite Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl.”

“The Light Between Oceans” is set for a September 2 release.

The official logline for the film is as follows:
