In a world of remakes, reboots, and spin-offs, it was only a matter of time before one of the most beloved cult classics of all time was treated to a follow up over 20 years later. The popularity of the Coen Brothers’ “The Big Lebowski” has only increased since its initial release, and now fans of The Dude can rejoice as his rival, Jesus Quintana, is getting his own movie.
The lord and savior himself, John Turturro, is writing and directing “The Jesus Rolls,” which will follow the iconic side character and his friends, Petey and Marie. A new teaser trailer for the “Lebowski” spin-off recently dropped, and while there isn’t much to it other than Turturro’s signature ball-licking (bowling ball of course), flames, a lucky strike, and neon text, it’s enough to announce the arrival of the king of kings.
The official synopsis is as follows: The Jesus rolls on. Hours after being released from prison, Jesus Quintana (John Turturro) pairs up with fellow misfits Petey (Bobby Cannavale) and Marie (Audrey Tautou), and embarks on a freewheeling joyride of petty crime and romance.
While the Coen’s aren’t involved in any capacity, they did give Turturro their blessing to go forth with the project. It’s almost impossible to imagine anything living up to the greatness of “The Big Lebowski,” but one can only hope that “Jesus Rolls” will make for a nice companion piece to the aforementioned classic.
“The Jesus Rolls” bowls its way into theaters and VOD on March 6.
