WATCH: New Trailer and Poster for ‘A United Kingdom’ with David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer and poster for Amma Asante’s “A United Kingdom.”  The film stars David Oyelowo and Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike.

“A United Kingdom” tells the true story of the forbidden love of King Seretse Khama of Botswana (Oyelowo) and Ruth Williams (Pike), a white woman from London.  The two caused an international uproar when they decided to marry in the late 1940s just as apartheid was being introduced into South Africa.  It was a decision that altered the course of African history.

The film also stars Jack Davenport, Tom Felton, and Nicholas Lyndhurst.  Written by Guy Hibbert, the film is produced by Rick McCallum, David Oyelowo, Peter Heslop, Brunson Green, Justin Moore-Lewy, and Charlie Mason.

Will the film be a potential Oscar player for the awards season 2017?  Based on the early word from the crowd that saw the film back at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, there could be a chance.  Studios have not been shy about releasing some of their awards magnets earlier in the year.  Fox Searchlight had tremendous success with Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” two years ago, which opened in February.

Oyelowo is in the middle of of his own Oscar campaign for his supporting performance in Mira Nair’s “Queen of Katwe” from Walt Disney Pictures.

“A United Kingdom” is scheduled to hit theaters on February 17, 2017.
