WATCH: New Trailer Released For Netflix’s ‘The Two Popes,’ Starring Anthony Hopkins & Jonathon Pryce

The Two Popes

Netflix have revealed the first full length trailer for “The Two Popes,” starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe nominee Jonathon Pryce. The film is directed by Fernando Meirelles and stars Hopkins as Pope Benedict and Pryce as Pope Francis.

From Fernando Meirelles, the Academy Award-nominated director of “City of God,” and three-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten, comes an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church.

Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

Meirelles is an Academy Award nominated director, best recognized for the 2002 film, “City of God.” He also helmed “The Constant Gardener,” starrign Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz and Danny Huston. The film brought him a Best Director Golden Globe nomination in 2006. He directs “The Two Popes” with a script written by Anthony McCarten (“The Theory of Everything,” “Darkest Hour”).

“The Two Popes” world premiered at Telluride Film Festival earlier this year. Awards Circuit’s own Clayton Davis wrote in his review:

Precisely and sensitively confronted by two affecting performances from Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins, on the easel of the year’s most spirited and lively scripts by Anthony McCarten, the film is an undeniable triumph that very few movies will be able to achieve this year.

Meirelles’ film has won a total of five Audience Awards at festivals including Mill Valley Film Festival, Hamptons International Film Festival and Middleburg Film Festival. At its world premiere in Telluride, first reactions praised the film’s two leads and its screenplay.

“The Two Popes” is produced and distributed by Netflix. It release in limited theaters November 27 and hits streaming December 20. The film will also be playing at AFI Fest November 18.
