WATCH: Official Trailer for Asghar Farhadi’s ‘Everybody Knows,’ Film to Open Cannes


Asghar Farhadi‘s “Everybody Knows” will open the 71st Cannes Film Festival, according to festival organizers.

The IMDb synopsis says:

“Carolina, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, who returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her Argentinian husband and children. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open.”

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in the film. Cruz won the Academy Award for her supporting performance in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” She was also nominated for “Volver” and “Nine.” She also starred in films including “Vanilla Sky,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” and can be seen on television as Donatella Versace in “American Crime Story.”

Bardem has seen a similar awards trajectory. He was nominated for the 2000 film “Before Night Falls,” and then won for “No Country for Old Men” in 2007. He was nominated again for “Biutiful” in 2010. And he also appeared in “Collateral,” “Skyfall,” and “mother!”

Bardem and Cruz started dating while filming “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and were married in 2010. They also recently co-starred in “Pablo Escobar,” which is still making its way through the festival circuit.

Farhadi wrote and directed “Everybody Knows.” Farhadi was nominated for an Academy Award for writing the original screenplay, “A Separation.” While he did not win that award, the film won Best Foreign Language Film in 2011. He won the Oscar again for “The Salesman” in 2016.

Farhadi has taken several films to Cannes. In 2013, “Le passé/The Past” won The Prize of an Ecumenical Jury, and was nominated for the Palme D’or. “The Salesman” was also nominated for screenplay and the Palme D’or in the south of France in 2016.

The 71st Cannes Film Festival will run from May 8 to 19 in Cannes, France.
