Last summer, Kathleen Kennedy surprised and delighted fans with the news that “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” would live on with new seasons at Disney+. Now, the streaming service reveals a new poster and trailer for the final episodes.
The animated series premiered on the Cartoon Network in 2008. Set between the events of the movies “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith,” “The Clone Wars” explores the story of the growing power of the Empire, and the Jedi Knights who are trying to stop it.
After five seasons on Comedy Central, the sixth premiered on Netflix in 2014, and fans assumed it was the end of the show. And it might have been had Disney+ not come along. Dave Filoni, one of the developers of the series, has returned for the seventh and final 12 episodes. Filoni also serves as an executive producer on the smash hit, live-action “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian.”
The new season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” will continue to build toward the events of Episode III, “Revenge of the Sith,” in which Anakin Skywalker met his fate by taking up the mantle of Darth Vader.
“Star Wars” and “The Clone Wars” were, of course, created by George Lucas. After the way the sixth season ended, not everyone will be back, but among those returning cast members are Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan, and Sam Witwer as “Maul.”
“The Clone Wars” has been nominated for dozens of awards, including nods from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, several Annie Awards, and Critics Choice.
The new season will premiere on Disney+ on February 21 and run new episodes weekly.
