WATCH: Steve McQueen and Viola Davis Up the Intensity in 2nd ‘Widows’ Trailer

Widows 5

One of the most anticipated films of the year continues to be “Widows” from Steve McQueen. The film follows Viola Davis as she assembles a crew of women to pull off a heist job. The heist becomes life or death when other criminals come out of the woodwork, threatening Davis and her crew’s families. McQueen’s picture appears to lean into the genre and could be a potential box office and critical darling. Today, we got a new trailer that fills in some of the gaps from the original.

The “Widows” trailer gives us a clearer picture of some of the roles for the cast in question. Obviously, Viola Davis will remain the centerpiece of the film, not only as it’s star, but the heartbeat. There was some confusion over the roles of Brian Tyree Henry and David Kaluuya. It can now be said with near certainty that both are on board as outside antagonists set to apply pressure to the ladies. The core four women include Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez, and Cynthia Erivo. While we can establish that Robert DuVall plays the father of Colin Farrell, there’s still little information on how he plays into the film.

Overall, “Widows” continues to look like a standout action and genre film. It’s an interesting next step for McQueen, who made his name with prestige films. Yet stepping outside his comfort zone may be the best thing for his career. Davis still looks marvelous, and if the rest of the cast carries this intensity, it could easily become a hit. The question now looms about whether or not it can be an Oscar player. Perhaps this could a film to greatly benefit from the Popular Film category come February.
