WATCH: Strippers Turn the Tables in First Trailer for ‘Hustlers,’ Starring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu

STX Entertainment has released the first trailer for “Hustlers,” directed by Lorene Scafaria. It stars Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Madeline Brewer, Stormi Maya, Trace Lysette, Lizzo and Cardi B.

“Hustlers” follows a group of former strip club employees who band together on an escapade to con their Wall Street clients. The film was inspired by an article published by New York Magazine entitled “The Hustlers at Scores” written by Jessica Pressler. In the trailer, Lopez’s character Ramona teaches Wu’s Destiny some tricks on the dancing pole. Soon, they’re banding together to turn the tables on their money hungry and powerful New York clients after the stock market crash of 2008. It joins the recent indulgence of women-led heists and capers like Gary Ross’ “Ocean’s 8,” and Chris Addison’s “The Hustle,” a comedy of two female scam artists. With an ensemble of starlets, “Hustlers” could very well be a fun, wide success.

Scafaria spoke with IndieWire on casting real life musicians and entertainers for the screen:

“I think musicians and singers, performers, they’re just naturally very great at timing and rhythm and they just kind of are natural-born actors,” she said. “Lizzo, she comes with so much personality, Cardi comes with so much personality. I wanted to write them characters that showed off their personalities, but I also wanted to make sure that they still felt like they were part of the world and part of the ensemble and that nobody’s sticking out and everybody is still existing in the same movie.”

Scafaria directs and writes the screenplay for her fourth directorial feature. Her past work includes two TV films, “This is Heaven” and “Love is Dead.” She directed a few episodes of Fox’s hit comedy series “New Girl.” Her directorial debut came with 2012’s “Seeking a friend for the End of the World,” starring Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley.

“Hustlers” is being distributed by STX Entertainment and releases in theaters September 13.
