STX Entertainment has today released the intense trailer for “Greenland,” a sci-fi disaster thriller starring Gerard Butler, who must embark on a life-saving journey along with his family in order to protect them from an incoming comet.
Butler is no stranger to world-ending thrillers, having previously starred in “Geostorm” where he played a technology designer attempting to save the planet. Starring alongside Butler in “Greenland” includes “Homeland” alumni Morena Baccarin and “The Leftovers” star Scott Glenn.
The following is the synopsis for “Greenland” as published by STX Entertainment to accompany the trailer’s release:
“A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.”
The trailer promises plenty of action and intense set-pieces, with director Ric Roman Waugh having provided these before with “Angel Has Fallen” which also starred Butler alongside Morgan Freeman. Chris Sparling has penned the script, with his most recent work including the horror film “Down a Dark Hall” and the Netflix original “Mercy.”
The trailer hints that “Greenland” is ‘coming soon,’ with STX Entertainment also lining up the British drama “The Secret Garden” starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters to a 2020 release too.
