Derek Cianfrance (“The Place Beyond the Pines,” “Blue Valentine”) is back with his latest emotional drama, “The Light Between Oceans.” Current Oscar nominees and real-life couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander star in the screen adaptation of M.L. Stedman’s novel of the same name. The first trailer for the film was released today and can be found below.
The film features Vikander and Fassbender as a husband and wife who live on a remote Australian island. One day, a baby appears to them in a tiny boat and they decide to keep the child and raise it as their own. Things get complicated when the child’s real mother (Rachel Weisz) enters the picture and the couple is faced with a moral dilemma.
“True Detective” and “Macbeth” cinematographer Adam Arkapaw worked on this film, which features an adapted script by Cianfrance. The official logline for the film is as follows:

On a remote Australian island in the years following World War I, lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander), discover a boat washed ashore carrying a dead man and a two-month old baby. Rescuing the infant, they make the decision to raise her as their own but the consequences of their choice prove to be devastating.
Fassbender is currently nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Steve Jobs.” Vikander is the presumed favorite to take home the Best Supporting Actress award for her role opposite Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl.”
“The Light Between Oceans” is set for a September 2 release. It is rumored that the film could screen at Cannes later this year as well.
