After making a splash at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “High Life” will finally orbit into theaters. It’s a film that has critics pretty split down the middle. Some like it while others don’t know what to make of it. Judging by the latest trailer, it’s not hard to see why it has people divided. The new sci-fi flick by Claire Denis looks like quite a headtrip.
“High Life” follows a group of death row inmates on a dangerous space mission. They’re tricked into believing that they’ll be freed if they take part of the mission. However, what they don’t know is that they’re unwilling participants of sexual experimentation by the scientists on board.
The film stars Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson as the leads. Pattinson plays one of the inmates who has an infant daughter. Binoche plays one of the sinister doctors that plans on experimenting on the inmates.
Both Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000 from Outkast) and Mia Goth round out the rest of the principle cast. After leaving an impression in last year’s “Suspiria,” it looks like Mia Goth could once again be a standout.
As for director Claire Denis, she’s not exactly known for doing science fiction. Dramas like “Beau Travail” and “White Material” are her most famous work amongst cinephiles. But it’s admirable that she’s trying something different. Given the film’s divisive reception, there are those responding to it.
As previously mentioned, it looks like quite a headtrip. But that’s why it makes it a good fit for A24 Films who acquired the distribution rights. Whether it’ll be a commercial sell remains to be seen. But having Robert Pattinson of “Twilight” fame should guarantee some interest.
