Focus Features introduced the trailer for a new documentary that goes inside the Vatican with Pope Francis.
Wim Wenders directs this unique documentary, “Pope Francis: A Man of His Word.” Unlike other profile-type docs, this takes the audience on a journey with the Pope.
The studio describes it this way:
The pope’s ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today’s global questions. From his deep concern for the poor and wealth inequality, to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face and calls for peace.
Pope Francis was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina as Jorge Bergoglio. He dedicated his life to the church, becoming a priest and then an archbishop, and eventually a cardinal. He ascended to the papacy in March 2013 when Pope Benedict XVI became the first pope to resign the office in nearly 600 years.
Director Wim Wenders is a three-time Academy Award nominee. He has been thrice nominated for Best Documentary Feature. “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Pina,” and “The Salt of the Earth” were each nominated for Oscars. The German filmmaker also crafts narrative features. He directed the enduring “Paris, Texas,” and last year’s “Submergence,” which starred Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy.
Focus Features will release “Pope Francis: A Man of His Word” on May 18.
