What’s On TV? – Friday (01/10/20) – Netflix Takes You Overseas With ‘I Lost My Body’ & ‘Atlantics’

At the Golden Globes, “Parasite” director Bong Joon-Ho stated, “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” So, there’s no better time to start overcoming those barriers than with this week’s selections from Netflix. These choices, along with other movie and television options, highlight a jam-pack Friday night at home.

“I Lost My Body” (Netflix)

Netflix has broken into competition for just about every award at this year’s Oscars. With “I Lost My Body,” the set their eye on the Best Animated Feature Prize with this profoundly moving fantasy-drama. Based on an acclaimed novel, it follows a severed hand’s journey from a testing lab to back to its original owner. Along the way, the hand starts to remember his life with his attached owner, and how he ended up detached. While it might seem simple at first, it’s beautifully executed and leaves you in pieces. “I Lost My Body” is easily one of the best-animated films of 2019.

Making this year’s Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film is “Atlantics,” Senegal’s supernatural romance-drama submission. Set in a Dakar, it follows a group of construction workers who are working a futuristic high rise. Without getting any pay for months, the group decides to leave the country in search of a better life. Among the group is Souleiman (Ibrahima Traoré), who’s fallen in love with Ada (Mame Bineta Sane). While they are genuinely in love, Ada is set to marry Omar (Babacar Sylla), forcing divine miracle to bring them together. Deeply shot and written by director Mati Diop, “Atlantics” will leave you mesmerized till the very end.
