What’s on TV – Friday (1/4/19) – Golden Globe Nominated Constance Wu Returns to TV

While Fridays are not always the biggest night on television, there are still fun shows to watch out for. With the Golden Globes just around the corner, why not tune in to watch a nominee on her long running series? Constance Wu and “Fresh Off the Boat” return to television, as does a block of CBS programming that should entertain you this evening.

Pick Of The Day – ABC Comedy Block (8 PM – 9 PM)

There’s no doubt that Constance Wu broke through as a future movie star this year. However, Wu has long been a fascination of many because of her performance on “Fresh Off the Boat” on ABC. The actress plays the matriarch to a Taiwanese family living in Orlando, Florida. Randall Park plays her husband and a litany of strong performers rotates through the show as guest actors. Wu really shines, and with tonight’s episode focusing on her relationship with Park, this should be a great one to tune in for.

After you check out Wu’s series, make sure to stay around for “Speechless” at 8:30 PM. The sitcom features Minnie Driver in the lead role, but the family ensemble really shines here. Each of the kids has shown true talent as a performer, specifically Micah Fowler. We highlighted Fowler as a breakthrough performer when the show debuted, and he’s only gotten better since then.

What’s Premiering?

No new series are hosting series or season premieres tonight.

What’s Returning?

However, a three-hour block of CBS shows should bring home the action you’re craving on a Friday night. The night kicks off with the return of “MacGyver” at 8 PM. The reboot continues to draw viewers, and seems like it could have a healthy run on CBS. Afterwards, “Hawaii Five-0” brings on another procedural. While the show had some turnover to start season 8, it has found a new groove, and the mid-season premiere of Season 9 looks to keep that momentum going. After all, it still has Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin, which must be why its still on. Finally, they close down the evening with “Blue Bloods” and good old Tom Selleck. If you’re looking for just a fun night of throwback procedurals, CBS has got you covered.
