What’s on TV? – Friday (2/1/19) – ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Slashes Through the Competition

This week, one of the first big films of the year hits the ground running. “Velvet Buzzsaw” comes to Netflix off of a strong debut at the Sundance Film Festival. The Jake Gyllenhaal starring thriller and horror looks to be one of the strongest offerings this week. However, “Strike Back” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” have each returned and are worthy of your time. “Strike Back” should cater to the action junkies and espionage fans. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” has the comedy and musical fans covered. If you don’t like those options, that’s fine! “Jurassic Park,” “Apocalypto,” and “Logan” are making the TV rounds.

Pick of the Day

Velvet Buzzsaw (Netflix)

Velvet Buzzsaw

One of the most fascinating films of the past few months, “Velvet Buzzsaw” makes its debut on Netflix today. From writer and director Dan Gilroy, the film follows a group of art dealers, critics, and artists who come into contact with spectacular work. The only problem seems to be that the art might be cursed. As the characters begin to die in increasingly horrible ways, the film comments on art, commerce, and of course, a little bit of horror. “Velvet Buzzsaw” stars Jake GyllenhaalRenee Russo, Zawe Ashton, Toni Collette, Daveed Diggs and more. What’s Premiering?

Strike Back (Cinemax)

One of the more interesting British series to make its way over from the UK has been “Strike Back,” an action and spy adventure show. Now in its seventh season, a lot has changed for the main characters. However, it remains as cool and tension driven as ever. In many ways, “Strike Back” is an underrated version of “Homeland,” but it is often better than that show in many ways. Following the members of this British, Defence Intelligence team has been worth the trip and this season looks to up the stakes once more. Check it out on Cinemax now!

What’s Returning?

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (CW)

The one true musical/comedy on television, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is heading towards the end of the show. Sadly, the incredibly clever and silly series concludes at the end of this season. Yet do not fret, there will be a line of shows and movies ready to pick up the stars of the show as soon as it concludes. The clear actress to watch will be Rachel Bloom, who seems destined to win another Golden Globe down the road. Bloom will also direct an episode as the show winds down, so keep an eye on the multi-hyphen as a force to be reckoned with in the future. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” you were better than we deserved.

Movies on TV

One of the all-time great blockbuster films will rule the night. An adventure 65 million years in the making returns to television with “Jurassic Park” airing on AMC at 8 PM. Steven Spielberg‘s game-changing film helped usher in CGI into the mainstream, while also showing off incredible practical effects. The film became the highest grossing film of all-time until Titanic” took the crown in 1997, but remains a highly relevant and pop culture driving film more than 25 years later. Watch the masterpiece that also happens to be my favorite movie of all time.

Meanwhile, a dark and gory story from Mel Gibson will air on BBC America at 8 PM. Arguably Gibson’s best film as a director, “Apocalypto” follows an indigenous man trying to the return home to his wife and child after he is captured. The story features epic set pieces, and the violence is terrifying. Yet the film also features some grade A visual effects, makeup effects, and brilliant cinematography. “Apocalypto” remains one of the most underrated films of the 2000s, and given Gibson’s problematic nature, “Apocalypto” will likely never get the credit it deserves.

Finally, “Logan” airs on HBO at 7:40 PM. The farewell film for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine became one of the great films of 2017. Jackman was brilliant, but he was not alone in delivering a great performance. Patrick Stewart was also excellent, delivering an emotional and heartwrenching performance. The screenplay gave the two performers more opportunities to stand out than ever before, leading to an Oscar nomination for screenplay, the first time a superhero film had ever accomplished that goal. “Logan” was an excellent film, and will continue to be seen as one of the high water marks of the genre for years to come.
