Andy Samberg, Amy Schumer, and more drop onto streaming platforms…

In the long, hot days of summer, television often becomes a difficult place to navigate. Given the current state of the world and the pandemic, this continues to be true. However, this does not mean there are not hidden gems found throughout the week that can be discovered. This week, several movies will be premiering digitally (including “First Cow,” “Greyhound,” and “Palm Springs“), and several premieres are due to occur.

Pick of the Week

Stateless(Netflix)- Wednesday, July 8

This new miniseries produced and co-created by Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett follows four major characters (played by Blanchett herself, Yvonne Strahovski, Dominic West, and Jai Courtney) as their disparate journeys are intertwined when they meet at an immigration detention center. Despite being an Australian production, the themes that will apparently be portrayed are likely relevant to the current American refugee crisis. The show was already met with raves upon its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and upon its initial Australian broadcast. Thus, the rest of the world will now be able to experience what Australia and the Berlin festivalgoers were so fortunate to have already seen.

Premiere of the Week

Expecting Amy (HBO Max)- Thursday, July 9

New three-part docuseries from HBO Max, this follows the difficult journey of comedienne Amy Schumer‘s pregnancy. It examines the difficulties faced by Schumer as her pregnancy complicated her touring and preparation for a stand-up special. It is rare for comedians to give any access to their behind the scenes life, so a series like this is catnip for fans of Schumer or anyone curious about the life that comedians live.

Movie of the Week

Palm Springs (Hulu) – Friday, July 10

One of the biggest audience hits from Sundance 2020 will have its wide release via Hulu after becoming the most lucrative purchase ($17.5 million) in that festival’s history. The film revolves around two strangers (Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti) who meet at a wedding in Palm Springs but find themselves stuck in a time loop a la “Groundhog Day.” The rapturous reception the film received at Sundance will be put to the test with a wider audience, and despite being unable to release in theaters, a substantial Hulu audience could prime this film to be an instant hit.
