midsommar 2019 3

As we enter the new decade, tonight is an excellent opportunity to take a look back at one of the best films of 2019 with Ari Aster’s “Midsommar.” Along with another hit from 2019, the first Friday of 2020 looks to be a fun time at home.

Pick of the Day:

“Midsommar” (Amazon Prime)

In his follow-up to 2018’s ‘Hereditary,” director Ari Aster brings us a new nightmare about   grief and the struggles within a relationship. “Midsommar” is about Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor), a couple who are on the verge of breaking up. But when tragedy strikes Dani, the separation is put on pause. Instead of moving on, Christian invites Dani to join him and his friends on a trip to Sweden to attend a rare festival. What starts as an innocent affair turns into something very sinister, revealing the group has become part of a pagan sacrificial tradition. With a tense pace, lavish direction, and a knock-out performance from Pugh, you’ll want to experience one of the best horror films of the decade.

Also on TV:

“Pokémon Detective Pikachu” (HBO) at 8:00 PM ET

Amidst all the noise surrounding “Avengers: Endgame” this past summer, you might have missed one of the most entertaining blockbusters of the year. Set in the expansive Pokémon world, “Detective Pikachu” follows the beloved character (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) as he must help a young man (Justice Smith) find his missing father. Loosely based on the video game of the same name, it’s a visual wonder and the best Pokémon movie ever assembled. You don’t even need to be a fan of the property to like “Detective Pikachu.” It’s a thrilling action-adventure film with plenty of humor and lovable creatures.
