What’s On TV? – Monday 12/16/19 – Strong Independent Women and Pop Culture Classics

Tonight’s lineup is filled with standout, star-turn performances (Tiffany Haddish in “Girls Trip” and Will Smith in “Hitch”), classic film adaptations (“Little Women”) and iconic films that have left an indelible mark on pop culture (“A Few Good Men” and “Menace II Society”). Monday is all about strong women standing up for themselves (from Jo March to the women of “This Changes Everything”). In the Christmas spirit? Tonight’s got you covered for that too (“The Great Christmas Light Fight,” “Wrap Battle,” “Holidays with the Houghs” and the Christmas romances of Lifetime and Hallmark).

Pick of the Day:

“This Changes Everything” (Starz) at 9:00 p.m. ET

“This Changes Everything” is a star-studded (Reese Witherspoon, Shonda Rhimes) documentary about gender inequality in the film and TV industries. Part history lesson part constructive cultural criticism, this doc is very timely as we are still in the midst of the TimesUp movement and calls for gender equality in all industries. This film seeks to spark initiative for action against discrimination and move for a redistribution of power within the industry. This frustrating yet inspirational documentary is bound to be an engaging watch tonight.

Movies on TV:

“A Few Good Men” (BBC) 8:00 PM ET

The 1992 Tom Cruise classic is a legal drama that has embedded itself in the pop culture fabric. This oft quoted film tells the story of a JAG lawyer defending Marines accused of murder, but who claim they were acting under orders. Also starring Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon and written by Aaron Sorkin, “A Few Good Men” is a thought-provoking courtroom drama filled with memorable performances and lines. A definite must-watch for any film buff.

“Girls Trip” (FX) 8:00 p.m. ET

Looking for side-splitting laughs tonight? 2017’s breakout hit comedy “Girl’s Trip” has got you covered. Raunchy comedy mixed with a little drama and lots of love and friendship (a lá “Bridesmaids”), this buddy dramedy follows four lifelong friends to the Big Easy for a weekend of self-discovery, rekindled friendships, marital revelations and good spirited fun. Starring Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish, “Girl’s Trip” is a fun watch to start your week.

“Little Women” (TCM) 8:00 PM ET

We all know the beloved Louisa May Alcott classic story of the March sisters of the 19th century. In honor of the Christmas release of Greta Gerwig‘s 2019 version of “Little Women,” TCM is showing the 1933 and 1949 versions back-to-back. Starring the incomparable Katherine Hepburn and Joan Bennett, this film adaptation is where the screen’s love of Alcott’s work began. This timeless story is guaranteed to entertain tonight.
