What’s on TV? – Monday (3/2/20) – Ring in Women’s History Month With Real Life Valkyries and History-Making Women

The Bachelor 4 1024x683 1

Tonight’s line up has got something for the history buffs (“Viking Women: The Real Valkyries,” “Gangs of New York”), pop culture aficionados (“Back to the Future,” “Scarface,” “The Bachelor: The Women Tell All,” “Easy A”), sci-fi/super hero crew (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Underworld: Blood Wars,” “Black Lightning,”) and everyone in between. There’s Oscar-caliber fare (“The Hurt Locker”) and lighter, more feel-good fun (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) and lots of reality TV thrown in for good measure (“The Voice,” “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” “Love and Hip Hop”). So pick what tickles your fancy for tonight.

Pick of the Day:

“Viking Women: The Real Valkyries” (Smithsonian) at 8:00 p.m. ET

When you think of Vikings, for most people, men are the first to come to mind. But in honor of Women’s History Month, the Smithsonian channel is shining the spotlight on the fearless females. For centuries, historians believed all Viking warriors were men, but new archaeological discoveries on a small island in central Sweden have revealed evidence that some of the fighters were women. Game changer! Tune in tonight to see the true story behind the fierce women like The Valkyries in Norse mythology.

Movies on TV:

“The Hurt Locker” (Cinemax) 8:50 PM ET

Keeping in the Women’s History Month theme, why not tune in to watch “The Hurt Locker,” the film that made history when Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar for Best Director that year. Set during the Iraq War, this tension-filled film is the story of a maverick Sergeant at odds with his squadron. With an all-star cast featuring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Evangeline Lilly, and Guy Pearce this war drama will keep you on the edge of your seat with violent urban combat.

“Back to the Future” (Freeform) 8:30 p.m. ET

back to the future

A modern classic. If you haven’t seen “Back to the Future” before (what rock have you been living under?), tonight is your chance to correct that oversight. This adventure story is wacky and fun and definitely a must-watch. A time-traveling DeLorean and a 17-year-old Marty McFly (wonderfully played by Michael J. Fox) are accidentally sent 30 years into the past to team up with an eccentric scientist (Christopher Lloyd). Shenanigans are guaranteed to ensue. See where the memes, cult obsession and catchphrases all began.

“Gangs of New York” (HBO) 6:05 PM ET

An epic historical crime drama set in late 1800s New York City, “Gangs of New York” is an enthralling, bloody and melodramatic Martin Scorsese masterpiece. Nominated for Best Picture in 2002, this film tells the story of “Bill the Butcher” (a terrifying Daniel Day-Lewis) who terrorizes the immigrant population of the notorious Five Points and goes head to head with Amsterdam (well-acted by Leonardo DiCaprio) who’s out for revenge. There’s gang warfare, political rivalries, slum underworld and civil unrest in the lead up to the Civil War. Think “Goodfellas” set in the 19th century.
